Cultural Heritage

Panagia-KykkouCultural heritage is the legacy of older generations to the future ones. Cultural heritage is unique, irreplaceable, inalienable as it moves forward through the ages. It is true, that culture can be a foundation and a support for the people in order to face today’s and future’s challenges.

In Cyprus, we have the privilege to live in a country with huge cultural heritage which can be found in archaeological places, monuments, ethics, customs and traditions. Heritage for us is a teacher and a guide, helping us to face the future and showing us our roots. The same time, we have the responsibility of conserving, safeguarding and enhancing our cultural heritage.

Παναγια-ΠοδίθουCultural heritage in Cyprus is connected mainly to the religious ecclesiastical heritage. Values, religious traditions, written ecclesiastical documents, are a big part of islands’ tradition. Their protection, knowledge and enhancement are definitely a need. Recognizing the responsibility of enhancing religious heritage, the Church of Cyprus is planning the digitization of the religious cultural heritage of Cyprus.  In order to digitize material and intangible cultural heritage, the Church of Cyprus will create digitalization laboratories.

Holy Metropolis of Limassol will play a leading role in these efforts because of its technical expertise. In particular, Holy Metropolis of Limassol will create digital laboratories and will digitalize part of the ecclesiastical cultural heritage of its region. This action is under the Collaboration Program Interreg V-A “Greece – Cyprus 2014 -2020”, «Ψηφιακό Αποσφράγισμα Αγιώνυμων Νήσων», (Πρόγραμμα Συνεργασίας Interreg V-A «Ελλάδα – Κύπρος 2014-2020, συγχρηματοδοτούμενο από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΤΠΑ) και από Εθνικούς Πόρους της Ελλάδας και της Κύπρου).

Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus will start a related action under the Collaboration Program Interreg V-A “Greece – Cyprus 2014 -2020”, “RECULT”, (Πρόγραμμα Συνεργασίας Interreg V-A «Ελλάδα – Κύπρος 2014-2020, συγχρηματοδοτούμενο από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση (ΕΤΠΑ) και από Εθνικούς Πόρους της Ελλάδας και της Κύπρου)for the material and intangible heritage of its region.  Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus will use the two databases and will disseminate the methodology and technologies for corresponding actions in other metropolitan districts. By the “RECULT” project, Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus aims at using and expanding the digitalized material and finally at protecting and enhancing ecclesiastical cultuΣταυρόςral heritage.

In the referred projects FILOKALIA’S role is considered to be a key factor since FILOKALIA supports both of them through volunteer work towards the implementation of the project.
