Participation of Filokalia in a conference on Religious Tourism held in Heraklion, Crete

On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, a conference was held in Heraklion, Crete, entitled: “Prospects for the development and promotion of Religious/Pilgrimage Tourism as a Thematic Form of Tourism in Greece and Cyprus”, in the framework of the project “Promotion and dissemination of cultural and natural heritage through the development and institutional strengthening of religious tourism in the island region of Greece and Cyprus – RE-CULT “, which is under the INTERREG VA Greece – Cyprus Cooperation Program 2014-2020 and is co-financed by the European Union (ERDF) and from National resources of Greece and Cyprus.

The main goal of the conference was the discussion on the promotion of religious tourism. The conference was attended by representatives from the Church of Greece and the Holy Archbishopric of Crete, the Region of Crete, the Municipalities of Hersonissos and Sitia, the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism of Cyprus, the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises, the Cyprus University of Technology, the Heraklion Chamber, the Heraklion Development Agency, the Higher School of Tourism Education of Crete and ETAM S.A., the contractor company of the Ministry of Tourism for the preparation of the strategic planning for the institutional strengthening of the religious/pilgrimage tourism.

In the context of the conference, Mr. Vassilios Drakonakis, from the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus, presented the new technologies for digitization and preservation of tangible and intangible religious and cultural heritage based on their actions for the implementation of the RECULT project.

The main Beneficiary of the project is the Cypriot Deputy Ministry of Tourism, while the Ministry of Tourism of the Hellenic Republic, the Churches of Cyprus and Greece, the Association of Cyprus Tourist Enterprises, the University of the Aegean, the Cyprus University of Technology as well as the Research and Development Center of the Holy Metropolis of Syros participate as Beneficiaries.
